Tributes to ‘lovely’ Newry couple who pass away within two days of each other

A Newry husband and wife, described as a “lovely couple” and “great friends and neighbours”, have died within two days of each other.

Eileen McElroy (nee Duffy) passed away on Tuesday at Daisy Hill Hospital, while her husband Sean died on Thursday evening at Carlingford Lodge Nursing Home.

The couple, of Violet Hill Avenue, were parents to Gary, Kevin, Andrea, Sean and Darren. They also had 11 grandchildren, one of whom predeceased them, as well as a great-granddaughter.

Mrs McElroy’s funeral has been due to take place today (Friday) but was postponed after the death of her husband.

Their remains will leave their home Saturday 29th January at 1.15pm for 2pm Requiem Mass in St Catherine’s Church, Dominic Street, followed by burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.

Dozens of people extended their condolences on the Heaney Keenan Funeral Directors Facebook page.

Sincere condolences to all the family. Both Eileen and Sean were lovely neighbours to us especially to my mummy … Many’s a craic they had over the garden fence.”

Another wrote: “The saddest news, heartbreaking to lose both parents, lovely lovely people, RIP Eileen and Sean.”

The couple are also survived by a wide family circle.

The death has also occurred this evening, January 27th, 2022 of Sean McElroy, peacefully at Carlingford Lodge Nursing Home, Warrenpoint. Sean, dearly beloved husband of the late Eileen and much loved father of Gary, Kevin, Andrea, Sean and Darren, 77 Violet Hill Avenue. Newry

Sean & Eileen will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by their heartbroken sons, daughter, son-in-law Brendan, daughters-in-law Philomena, Bronagh, Bernie and Emma, grandchildren Eamon, Emma, Kevin, Rory, Ryan, Kieran, Orla, Ellen, Sean, Daniel and the late John, great granddaughter Bella, Eileen’s brothers John and Terry, her sisters Rita and Joan, Sean’s sisters Mona Trainor, Vera Stark and Eileen Doran, their nephews, nieces and their entire family circle, friends and the staff and residents of Carlingford Lodge Nursing Home, Warrenpoint.
