A young man who died following a four vehicle collision in Co Armagh has been named as 23-year-old Dylan McCann.
Mr McCann, from Cookstown, Co Tyrone, died at the scene of the collision early on Monday morning outside Newry.
Two other people, the driver of a van and passenger, remained in serious condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.
Four vehicles, two cars, a van and a lorry, were involved in the crash, which happened at approximately 6.30am on the Armagh Road at the junction of Church Road near Mullaghglass north of Newry.
Officers attended alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), a member of the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said.
“The collision involved a white Scania lorry, white Renault Master van, blue BMW and white Toyota Auris,” the spokesperson said.
“Medical treatment was provided to those injured – however, very sadly Dylan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Both the passenger and driver of the van remain in hospital where they are receiving treatment for serious injuries, while the drivers of the Toyota Auris and the Scania lorry were uninjured.” Mr McCann was driving the BMW.
The NIFRS said the “thoughts and sympathies” of the service are with the loved ones of a man who died.
“Two Appliances from Newry Fire Station and one appliance from Warrenpoint Fire Station attended the incident,” a spokesperson said.
“Firefighters used specialist rescue equipment to rescue 3 casualties from their vehicles. Tragically, a man, aged in his 20s, died at the scene.
“Firefighters left the incident at 7.59am.”
The NIAS said the two individuals with serious injuries were transported to the RVH in Belfast.
